The jousters charge

The riders' helmets are closed, and they raise 12-foot lances. Rope strung between posts separates their lanes, or the lists.

At a signal the horses charge. Their heavy hooves pound grass. The knights keep the lances raised until the last second, cradled on their outside arms. Just as they meet they lower the lances to the horizontal, across their bodies, aiming for the opponent.

A rider is unhorsed

On the first pass one nicks the other, earning a point. On the second pass the other makes a solid enough contact to shatter the balsa wood end-section of the lance, scoring again. On the third pass he plants his lance solidly in the target and feels his opponent slip off his mount. An unhorsing. The crowd goes wild.

Witness this year's competition and experience the extreme sport of Jousting. This year's competitors are:

Charlie Andrews

Charlie has been jousting for a number of years and has gained a reputation as a hard hitter. He is an adventurer, daredevil athlete and a warrior made of hard steel and sex appeal who enjoys flirting with both women and danger. He descends from a long line of Native American nobility and warrior blood lines of the Shoshone (Mono) Nation. An avid horseman, he is an award-winning showman who dominated in hunter-jumper and dressage divisions. A thrill seeker he moved into rough stock events where he excelled in bareback, saddle bronc, and bull riding.

Charlie served a 10 year tour of duty with the Navy Seals - the Navy's elite Special Forces unit - and is a veteran of Desert Storm and operation Restore Hope in Somalia. He turned the expertise he gained as a Seal into practice and now serves as the President of Trident Security & Associates, a full spectrum security and protection company based in Utah.

Tim Tobey ~ Sir Timothy of Shrewsbury

Tim has been interested in the medieval era since he was a boy. He was making his own helms, swords and chain mail even before he started jousting. He began his training in the fall of 2000 after meeting Shane Adams at his farm in Aris. Tim has been jousting now for the past 5 years during which time he has won an impressive array of medals and ribbons, the latest being the 2000 Canadian Light Armour Champion. Along with his jousting, he is a self-taught armourer and has made several suits including his own.

Richard Element

Richard Element and his mount Henry trained very hard for their first tournament in 2003, earning them a 3rd place finish in the Canadian Light Armour Jousting Division.

The Dragon's Lair 2004 International Jousting Tournament was another first for the team as they competed in the Heavy Armour Division with a new suit of armour and jousting techniques. With their strong ethics and great partnership they are worth keeping an eye on during future tournaments.

Richard is soundly supported by his wife and 2 children who have also taken an interest in this medieval horse sport, and compete along side him in mounted games during training events. When Richard isn't training or out riding with his family, he works as a nuclear engineer with Candu reactors near his home in Castleton, Ontario.

Wayne Fletcher ~ Sir William Falstaff

Wayne became passionate about jousting after seeing his first contact joust at a tournament in 2001. Right then and there he realized two things "They are really trying to knock one another off the horse", and "I want to do that!".

Wayne took up riding lessons in the spring of 2002 and that summer became the proud owner of Navarro. Through training camps and lots of saddle time Wayne entered his first light armour competition in the summer of 2004. His debut for the Knights of Valour was at the Picton Winery show where he took on the persona of Sir William Falstaff, the "Drunken Knight". He next focused on changing divisions to heavy armour for the summer of 2005. Wayne continues to practice and take instruction to perfect his art of the sport of Kings.

Brian Stephenson

Sir Brian hales from Belleville, Michigan where he works as a Substation Operator for DTE Energy, an electric company located in Detroit, Michigan. But that is just his day-job. On weekends, he gets to fulfill one of his fantasies - that of being a knight and testing himself at the skills of mounted games and full-contact jousting. Sir Brian was volunteering as a squire at the Silver Leaf Renaissance Faire in Kalamazoo, Michigan in July of 2004., when he met Shane Adams, got the jousting-bug and has never looked back since. Brian was knighted at the 2005 Renaissance Faire, and is presently training with the goal of being able to joust full-time next summer.

Brian is also very much a hands-on dad and spends time coaching his son Zachary's baseball team in the summer and is presently a coach's assistant for Zack's football team. Between games and his training, he is preparing Zack for squiredom in the future.

Jason Armstrong

From a young age, Jason Armstrong has been interested in Knights and Jousting. He is currently working as a Blacksmith in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and is competing in Light Armor and Heavy Armor Jousting shows and tournaments. A new Knight on the field, he is out to make a name for himself and to hit like a hammer.

Patrick Bjerke ~ Sir Magnus Onyx Malleous

Patrick was born in 1978 and has been jousting since 2000. To his credit, he has placed 3rd and 4th a number of times at the Dragon's Lair International Tournaments. He has also made his armour under Tim Tobey's tutelage, although Sir Tim disavows all knowledge of this venture. Patrick is a tough and competitive jouster who thoroughly loves to joust as is evidenced by his bright smile as he comes charging down the field, which also makes him a favourite with the ladies faire.

Patrick Lampke

He’s suave, he’s debonair, he’s a smelly Frenchman… loved and hated in equal measure. Patrick has a long standing career on the jousting circuit. He is known for hitting like a hammer. He has won numerous championships on both national and international level. He is hard to miss in his all black armor, his hard hitting style a mesmerizing spectacle.

Greg Canter ~ Sir Barchan

Canter believes he is the oldest full contact jouster in the United States in this type of jousting. “I play hard, I play to win,” says Canter, whose everday persona brings to mind Clark Kent rather than Sir Lancelot. But in the past 11 years, he’s been knocked off his horse against his will only 4 times. His opponents say he rides like he’s got Velcro in his saddle. He’s competed in the annual National Jousting Tournament in Waxahachie, TX since its inception in 1993. Most recently he rode in the Jousting Championships at Estes Part, Colorado.
