About the Event

The International Jousting Championships is a jousting competition and renaissance faire taking place every September in Angels Camp, CA. The event begain in 2003 at the Sonora fairgrounds and moved to Calaveras County in it's fourth year, in search of bigger outdoor areas. Jousting is the main event, but there's a lot going on and its a bit hard to really define the event; there's nothing else really like it. The Old World Jousting Village covers several acres with encampments, historical reenactors and crafts people.

There's good music and its not all what you might think; we've had everything from the pipes and drums of Wicked Tinkers to the traditional irish sounds of Dervish and Teada. In 2005 the upbeat Irish/American group Young Dubliners headlines while classic rockers Crazy Ivan rocked the pub with blues, pop and a bit of heavy metal.

For the shoppers out there the Celtic Marketplace offers all kinds of wares. There's food and drink a plenty, plus street performers, belly dancers, archery and armored combat. Its a great time so come on down and join us.

Lodging

Camping is available at the fairgrounds. The camping area is a mere few hundred feet from the front gate, very convenient, and it's pretty inexpensive. There are R.V. spots with hookups as well as spots for tent/car camping without hookups. Call the fairgrounds at 209-736-2561 to book a spot.

The Angel's Inn Motel Lodging is also available at the Angel's Inn family of motels, the faire's lodging sponsor. The rooms are nice and it's just a couple miles from the fairgrounds. Definately check them out, and when you book a room tell them you're in town for the faire.

For additional lodging information you can contact the Calaveras County Visitor's Bureau.

Directions - Map to the faire

The faire takes place at the Frogtown Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, CA.

The fairgrounds is on Gunclub Road, off Highway 49 (not Highway 4!), about 2 miles South of Angels Camp in California gold country.

From Stockton

  1. Take Highway 4 to Angels Camp.
  2. When you reach Angels Camp, make a right and follow Highway 49 to the fairgrounds a few miles out of town. Be sure to stay to the right (on Highway 49) when it splits from Highway 4 at the end of town.

From Sacramento

  2. Take Liberty Road until it ends at Highway 88, turn right onto 88.
  3. Follow Highway 88 until it ends at Highway 12, and turn left on Highway 12.
  4. Follow 12 until it merges with Highway 49 in San Andreas, then follow Highway 49 through San Andreas to Angels Camp.
  5. The Fairgrounds are just past Angels Camp on Highway 49.
Things to remember

The event is almost entirely outdoors, so remember to bring sunscreen. Also, you may want to bring along a lawn chair or small blanket for grass seating at the Saturday night concert. "Ins and outs" are ok, so if you don't want to lug a lawn chair around all day you can leave it in your car until you're ready. Also, remember:

  • Wear garb (renaissance faire clothing) if you've got it. If not, that's ok too.
  • Swords and knives must be peace tied such that they cannot be drawn from their sheath.
  • No dogs, except seeing eyed dogs and assistance animals.
  • No ice chests or outside food & drink (baby food & baby bottles are ok of course).
